Cocktails And Movies Geeks Out Over A Limited Theatrical Event That Promises Fun For All

His name is The Doctor. Over 1200 years old, he comes from the planet Gallifrey, home of the Time Lords. Through his lifespan he’s seen a lot of history, and made even more of it. But there’s one day that’s always stuck with him, a particularly painful day in his own personal history. A day where he made the ultimate sacrifice and secured galactic peace at the highest cost. It is a day that’s haunted him ever since, making him the man he is today. It is The Last Day Of The Time War, and it is a day he will be forced to confront yet again. He won’t be alone though, as he’ll have his colleagues, his companion – Clara, and… himself… times two. Having one Doctor can be dangerous enough, but imagine what three can do.

Doctor Who has been in existence for 50 years now, and I’ve only really been privy to its wonders for seven of the past eight years of “Nu Who.” Yet in those seven years, there’s been enough references and recalls to the classic series, that I know a fair bit about the older canon. Not enough to be a Classic Who expert, but enough to know what’s going on and who’s come before the modern times. I mention all of this because despite the previous knowledge that may seem required for anyone to get into this event, this story is pretty accessible to non-Whovians and Whovians alike. All you really need to know is what I’ve provided in the first paragraph summary, and you can feel free to go in and have fun as you like. However, if you like this event, you should definitely go back and watch at least the “modern” run that started in 2005. It’ll make rewatching The Day Of The Doctor that much more rewarding.

Naturally, Matt Smith and David Tennant are at their top game as the 11th and 10th Doctors respectively, and it is always a treat to see them having fun with a character they obviously know inside and out. Jenna Louise Coleman is also a given, as she shines so bright in the role of Clara that it’s hard to think that she’s only been with the show for a little over a half season. But perhaps the huge stand outs in this episode are none other than John Hurt, (whose War Doctor fits better into the line of Doctors than we were initially led to believe), and Billie Piper. Ms. Piper’s commendation stems from her portrayal a special variant on the Rose Tyler character Whovians love from the series and something altogether different.

The story takes a little getting used to, but once everything clicks together with past Whovian lore it becomes a supernova of brilliance. Doctor Who lends itself to a theatrical experience so easily, and this special only further proves the point… particularly with its epic usage of 3D technology. The special was filmed, obviously planned, and becomes absolutely astounding in 3D. Even the explosion of a Dalek becomes much MUCH more epic in 3D, with a theatrical sound system behind it. Anyone can broadcast a TV episode on a screen and say it’s an event, but Doctor Who manages to be worthy of theatrical exhibition every week it’s on. It just so happens they know how to go all out when they get the chance to do so.

There are two showings tonight in theaters across the nation, thanks to Fathom Events. If you don’t have tickets, you should be jumping on Fandango now. Don’t let being new to Doctor Who or not being current with the latest season stop you, you can always catch up later. This type of opportunity doesn’t come up with this wide of an availability all the time,  especially in truly gorgeous 3D. If there were every a Day for The Doctor to be in theaters, now’s a good time!
